Fulfilment by Amazon is Amazon’s logistics outsourcing service. It enables businesses to send their inventory to Amazon’s warehouses, where Amazon takes over the heavy lifting: storing the products, processing customer orders, picking, packing, shipping, and even handling customer service and returns.

Here are the key points about FBA:

  • Convenience & Reach – Products gain access to Amazon’s Prime badge and fast delivery network, which can boost sales.
  • Operational Outsourcing – Businesses don’t need to manage their own storage, shipping, or returns infrastructure.
  • Strict Requirements – Amazon enforces tight rules on product prep, labelling, and compliance; mistakes can mean fees, rejected stock, or destroyed goods.
  • Costs & Fees – Charges for storage and fulfilment can fluctuate, especially during peak seasons, which can impact margins.
  • Control & Flexibility – Stock sits inside Amazon’s ecosystem, limiting how you can brand, package, or fulfil orders for other channels.
  • Because of those trade-offs, many brands use FBA as one sales channel but also partner with third-party logistics (3PL) providers to maintain flexibility and support multi-channel sales (their own website, retail partners, etc.).
  • Starting 1 January 2026, Amazon will no longer provide its prep & labelling services for FBA shipments in the UK. That means tasks like FNSKU/barcode labelling, bundle/kitting, poly-bagging or bubble wrapping, safety seals, etc., must all be completed before you send the inventory to Amazon.

Why Outsource Your Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) Prep?

Outsourcing your Amazon FBA prep to a third-party logistics provider (3PL) can save you a lot of time, cost, and headaches. Here’s why many sellers do it:

Expertise with Amazon’s strict requirements

Amazon has rigid rules for labelling, barcoding, packaging, and carton prep.
Mistakes can lead to stock being rejected, delayed, or even destroyed. A 3PL that specialises in FBA already knows the compliance rules and ensures your shipments are always “Amazon-ready.”

Time & cost efficiency

Instead of you (or your team) spending hours stickering, bagging, or boxing products, a 3PL handles it. This frees you to focus on growth areas like sourcing, marketing, and product development.
Reduces the need to rent your own warehouse space or hire staff for seasonal demand.

Flexibility & scalability

3PLs can scale with your business – whether you send 100 units or 10,000.
They absorb seasonal spikes (like Q4 holiday sales) without you scrambling for storage or labour.

Multi-channel fulfilment options

If you use only FBA, your stock sits within Amazon’s ecosystem.
A 3PL can hold inventory for multiple sales channels (Amazon, Shopify, eBay, wholesale, retail partners). This gives you more control over branding, packaging, and customer experience outside Amazon.

Cost control

Amazon’s storage fees can spike during peak seasons.
Using a 3PL for prep and storage (then drip-feeding inventory into FBA) often reduces costs.
You avoid paying Amazon long-term storage or removal fees by keeping buffer stock outside their warehouses.

In short: Outsourcing FBA prep to a 3PL gives you compliance, cost savings, flexibility, and time back, while reducing risk of costly Amazon errors.
